Russian economy minister detained over alleged $2 million bribe
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Russia’s Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev was detained over allegations he took a $2 million bribe in return for supporting a major oil company, authorities said Tuesday.
The Investigative Committee anti-corruption body said in a statement that Ulyukayev was held late Monday after allegedly taking the money in a sting set up by security officials.
He is accused of taking the bribe for allowing the state-controlled oil giant Rosneft to acquire a 50% stake in another oil company, Bashneft.
Ulyukayev is the highest-ranking Russian official to have been arrested since the 1991 coup attempt in the then-Soviet Union.
No formal charges have been brought, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
