North Korea threatens ‘merciless retaliation’ to ‘foolish’ Donald Trump upon Seoul arrival
The blistering threat followed Trump’s statement aimed at Kim Jong-un claiming the “era of strategic patience is over”.
Speaking in Tokyo the US President said: “We are working to counter the dangerous aggressions of the regime in North Korean.
“The regime continues development of its unlawful weapons programs, including its illegal nuclear tests and outrageous launches of ballistic missiles directly over Japanese territory, are a threat to the civilised world and international peace and stability.
“We will not stand for that: the era of strategic patience is over.”
The US President’s remarks echoed those of his Vice President, Mike Pence, who spoke while visiting the South Korean side of the demilitarised zone.
The second leg of Trump’s Asia tour is set to get underway when he arrives in South Korea after reaffirming his alliance with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
When pressed on his statements Trump said: “We want to get it solved. It’s a big problem for our country and the world, and we want to get it solved.
“And there’s been 25 years of total weakness and so we’re taking a very much different approach.”
North Korean mouthpiece, Rodong Sinmun, said: “Nobody can predict when Trump does a reckless act.
“The only way for checking his rash act is to tame him with absolute physical power if the US misjudges [North Korea’s] toughest will and dares to act recklessly, the latter will be compelled to deal a resolute and merciless punishment upon the former with the mobilisation of all forces.”
Experts have warned Kim could detonate a nuclear weapon while Trump is visiting Seoul tomorrow.
White House officials and Asian leaders are concerned that North Korea may attempt to disrupt the President trip to Asia by conducting a missile test — or even a far more shocking atmospheric nuclear test.
The feared nuclear explosion could be visible to the US President as he tours South Korea in a defiant show of strength.
