Grambling student arrested in double murder on campus
A student has been arrested in the double homicide that occurred on Grambling State University’s campus early Wednesday morning.
Jaylin M. Wayne was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Earl Andrews and Monquiarious Caldwell. He was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
Wayne, a freshman from St. Louis, surrendered to law enforcement after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
“I feel confident that our investigators have put together a strong case,” Sheriff Mike Stone said. “As a department, we offer our condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. I want to thank our team of investigators for their dedication and the determined effort they put forth in working this case.”
University spokesman Will Sutton said both victims were 23 and from Farmerville, La., about 30 miles from Grambling.
Investigators believe Wayne, also 23, shot Andrews during a fight. He also shot Caldwell, who was coming to help Andrews.
Officers found the two victims in the courtyard between the Phyllis Wheatley and J.D.E. Bowen dormitories. Both men died at the scene.
“To the students and family members and parents of our GSU students here in Lincoln Parish, please rest assured that President (Rick) Gallot and I remain in close contact,” Stone said in a statement. “Increased activities and patrols will continue for the foreseeable future.”
Stone said in a statement that the suspect and victims knew each other “to some extent.” He stressed that the shooting wasn’t random or an act of terrorism.
“There are no indicators that this incident bears any resemblance to any of the random acts of violence or domestic terrorism that have been experienced around our country in recent weeks,” Stone said before the suspect’s arrest.
Classes at the historically black college were held as usual, but Grambling State’s president said the campus will have “increased police and security” this week.
Gallot told The News-Star on Wednesday that additional security measures were already in place before the shooting due to the anticipated influx of visitors to campus for homecoming.
He said he anticipated additional troopers to arrive on campus late Wednesday and stay throughout the weekend.
The university in northern Louisiana has an enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Andrews’ brother, Ledarius Heard, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that Andrews and Caldwell were friends from high school and cousins by marriage. Heard, 31, said his brother, who lived with him off campus in Ruston, was studying criminal justice and hoped to move to Texas after graduation to be closer to his 1-year-old son.
Heard said Andrews typically came home immediately after his classes but had been on campus Tuesday night to hang out with friends during homecoming week.
