A world record 18 costume changes in a minute:- Malaysian quick-change artist couple Avery Chin Yoke Leong and Sylvia Lim Chay Meet have entered the Guinness World Records for making 18 costume changes in one minute.
Both in their 30s, the couple were recognised for their presentation at the Happy Valley Theme Park in Wuhan, China, for the country’s national day celebration last Sept 28.
“We are proud to be Malaysian, especially given how the media here (in China) mentioned Malaysia in their report on our success,” Chin said when contacted.
“Strong gusts of wind across the open stage were a challenge during the presentation, something that even the representative from Guinness World Records recognised.
“You can see that we faced issues with the last two costume changes, but we managed to power through it to break the record.”
Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, the couple have been practising costume sleight-of-hand for the past eight years, usually doing shows with 12 costume changes.
We found 19 costumes extremely difficult. Usually, we do 12 costumes, but we began practising with 14 costumes five years ago.
“At the time, the world record was only 13 costumes, after which the records were regularly broken until we had to raise our changes to 19 costumes,” they said.
Chin, who holds a diploma in civil engineering, has been involved in the world of sleight-of-hand since his school years.
Since then, he has performed all over the world, including in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, China and on luxury cruise ships in the Bahamas, Caribbean Islands and Bermuda.
According to the world records’ website, Chin and Lim broke the world record for the category of “Most costume change illusions in one minute” by two costume changes.
Guinness World Records judge Charles Wharton was present at the event, which also saw various magic practitioners present to ensure that all the rules were adhered to.
The previous record saw 16 costume changes in a minute, which was held by Malaysian magic group Vivas Magic at Sunway Pyramid, a few weeks ago.
The video of the couple’s performance has been uploaded on the Guinness World Records YouTube channel and has been viewed over 380,000 times.
