New iPhone Leak Reveals Apple’s Brave Design Decision

New iPhone Leak Reveals Apple’s Brave Design Decision

“Maybe the next one?” It’s a line tech upgraders often say when a new smartphone release doesn’t fulfil all their wishes. But new information suggests it might actually be better to skip Apple AAPL +0.99%’s 2017 iPhones altogether…

Asian media giant Nikkei has revealed Apple will upgrade all its iPhones to OLED displays in 2018 compared to just one, extremely expensive new premium model in 2017.

Citing “two industry sources”, Nikkei’s Debby Wu says Apple’s plans to launch an OLED iPhone 8 and two LCD-based and incrementally upgraded iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus models will get significantly more ambitious next year and demand is likely to lead to shortages across OLED manufacturing worldwide. Wu also says Apple will again launch three new iPhones in 2018.

So why would/should you hold off for OLED in 2017?

Obviously if you can afford the sky high pricing of the OLED iPhone 8 in 2017 then you won’t need to. But if budget is a concern and you are pushed to the LCD iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus then it is worth bearing in mind OLED not only delivers dramatically better image quality than LCD, but it is also much more power efficient.

Consequently in 2018 even the famously undercooked battery in the 4.7-inch iPhone, might finally get the battery life bump users have deserved (and demanded) for years.

Interestingly a universal move to OLED will also enrich Apple’s biggest rival. Samsung will supply the majority of OLED displays in future iPhones and such investment is likely to allow the company to further improve its own iPhone-rivalling Galaxy S and Galaxy Note ranges.

With a supersized Galaxy Note 8 launching at around the same time as the new 2017 iPhones (despite talk of delays), it will be interesting to see how these two historic rivals act as their existing partnership (Samsung already provides multiple hardware components for iPhones) becomes even deeper.

Furthermore, with Tim Cook previously admitting hype about next generation iPhones hurts current generation iPhone sales, news of this leak about OLED 2018 models is likely to have Apple’s top brass looking nervously over their shoulders.
