New iPhone 8 Leak Supports Apple’s Courageous Decision

Apple’s flagship smartphone for 2017, the presumptively named iPhone 8, is expected to herald a new design for the device. This would be the first significant change to the look of Apple’s handset since the iPhone 6 was launched in 2014. Thanks to images posted by case manufacturers and the availability of detailed schematics that are all in agreement, the dimensions and layout of the iPhone 8 are clear.

Now we can get a closer look and a feel for the ergonomics of the screen through the TechSmartt YouTube channel as it demonstrates a leaked screen protector for Cupertino’s communicator.

The screen protector shows the biggest changes to the iPhone 8 design thanks to the expansive glass screen it will be covering. Examining it in conjunction with a 3D print of the iPhone 8 chassis, the tiny bezels of the new model are on show. As part of the increase in the screen size, the removal of the home button and the push up to the top edge of the device are also visible.

The expectation is that the top status bar in iOS will be split by the island holding the front facing camera and the various sensors. That will need some reorganisation of the top icon row to push the various alerts towards the left and right sides, but this isn’t a difficult issue to overcome.

What is more awkward is the obvious lack of a cutout from the home button. This ties in with the expectation of Apple moving to a virtual home button for the new iPhone – but leaves the question of biometric identification open. Previously the TouchID sensor was embedded into the home button, that’s going to have to change.

Many people are expecting Apple to use technology that can read a fingerprint through the glass of the touchscreen. The option of using a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the handset is one taken up by many Android manufacturers, but there’s no sign of a suitable cut-out on the leaked protective cases. 3D modelling suggests the iPhone 8 has an oversized power button on the right hand edge. If so that could allow TouchID to be embedded in the power button, a strategy employed by Sony on its high-end Xperia devices.

As we look at the new screen dimensions for the iPhone 8, we’ll let Apple continue to tease us with the location of TouchID. After it, it looks like we’re going to know everything else about the handset by the time the September launch comes around.
