Google Pixel, Pixel XL Sized Up With Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P
Google Pixel, Pixel XL Sized Up With Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P : The Fall has always been that time of year where Android fans look forward to the launch of a new Nexus smartphone, or sometimes a pair of Nexus devices. This year however, the Pixel branding is all but confirmed to be taking over from the Nexus line, and a pair of devices, simply dubbed Pixel and Pixel XL will be launching in less tha a week’s time.
Given that this is the second year in a row that Google has released a pair of devices, with little more than size separating them, it’s interesting to see how these new Pixel smartphones will shape up compared to last year’s Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, both of which were launching with 5.2-inch and 5.7-inch displays, respectively.
So far, the rumors and leaks point to the Pixel being a 5.0-inch Full HD device, while the Pixel XL will be larger at 5.5-inches with a Quad HD AMOLED display. Last year, Google’s pair of Nexus smartphones, made by LG and Huawei, were 5.2-inches and 5.7-inches in display size. Adding in some extra room for the earpiece, camera and other pieces of hardware, neither the 5X or 6P were all that diminutive.
This year, however, the Pixel and Pixel XL are a little smaller in terms of display size, and thanks to some Math from Android Central, the devices will be physically smaller overall. The below image puts all four devices side-by-side, going from the Pixel on the left all the way to the Nexus 6P on the right. On the inside, things have seen an upgrade as well, if the rumors and leaks appear to be correct that is, with Google moving on from the Snapdragon 810 to a Snapdragon 821 and both devices getting 4GB of RAM. Other specs appear to be fairly similar, such as the rumored 12-megapixel camera making a return inside of the Pixel and Pixel XL.
On the face of it, these devices appear to be smaller overall, and the design is also a little more pedestrian as well, which could be a big clue that Google is looking to market these towards the more average user, than say other Nexus devices have attracted in the past. Of course, well know a lot more next week, when Google announce the Pixel, Pixel XL, as well as new Chromecast devices and possibly a completely new platform bringing Android and Chrome OS even closer together than ever before.
