Consumer magazine finds iPhone 8 better than iPhone X

Consumers considering buying an Apple iPhone X may be put off after tests found an iPhone 8 may be just as good or maybe even better.

Magazine Consumer Reports found when comparing the iPhone 8 and iPhone X there wasn’t much overall difference between the two.

Both phones were in the top 10 recommended phone list, but the iPhone 8 rated just a little higher than the iPhone X thanks to durability.

The magazine found while the iPhone X has strengths in the quality of the screen, camera and the FaceID software, the lack of durability and battery life took away from the experience.

“If not for the damage in that durability test, the iPhone X would have come in ahead of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus,” said Richard Fisco, the head of smartphone testing at Consumer Reports.

The iPhone X is currently on sale for NZ$1799 while the iPhone 8 costs NZ$1249.

That lack of durability could end up hitting consumers in the pocket. In the US glass replacement on an iPhone X through Apple costs US$279 (NZ$403) for the front glass and US$549 (NZ$795) for the back glass.

Overall the magazine concluded it’s down to the consumer as to whether an iPhone X or iPhone 8 is best for them, but if they’re going for the iPhone X it would be prudent to get a case.
