Virginia dismisses forward Austin Nichols after just one game with team

Virginia dismissed forward Austin Nichols after just one game with the program.

The announcement by the school Friday comes three days after Nichols, a transfer from Memphis, scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds against St. Francis (N.Y.) in his first action with the seventh-ranked Cavaliers.

The junior sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules and was then suspended for Virginia’s two preseason games and the season opener against North Carolina-Greensboro.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this program, and Austin has lost that privilege,” coach Tony Bennett said in a statement. “We have standards for our student-athletes, and when those standards aren’t met, there are consequences, and this is the unfortunate consequence.”

Nichols was expected to help fill a frontcourt void for the Cavaliers left by the graduations of Anthony Gill and Mike Tobey. He started 60 games in two seasons at Memphis and averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks as a sophomore in 2014-15.
