Toronto FC reclaims Major League Soccer’s top spot from Chicago Fire:- Sebastian Giovinco scored twice and set up Jozy Altidore’s goal to help Toronto FC beat Orlando City 3-1 to take the overall lead in Major League Soccer on Wednesday, when Chicago was held to a draw at Portland.
Toronto FC (11-3-5) moved to 38 points, a point ahead of Eastern Conference rival Chicago.
Altidore scored his eighth goal of the season in the 18th minute. Giovinco split two defenders in midfield, drew two more defenders at the top of the box, and found a wide open Altidore for a calm finish under Joe Bendik’s legs.
Giovinco chipped in to make it 2-0 in the 46th and, after Carlos Rivas scored for Orlando, he scored again with a free kick in the 65th.
At Portland, Sebastian Blanco scored a 70th-minute equalizer to make it 2-2 and end undefeated Chicago’s four-game winning streak.
Fanendo Adi opened the scoring for the Timbers from the penalty spot in the 24th, and Arturo Alvarez tied it 10 minutes later.
Chicago took the lead when Brandon Vincent scored early in the second half, but Blanco’s equalizer ensured the Timbers shared the points.
In other MLS matches Wednesday, Gonzalo Veron scored a last-minute winner as the New York Red Bulls beat the New England Revolution 3-2, the Vancouver Whitecaps had a late 3-2 win over New York City and Houston ended a four-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Montreal.
The Red Bulls scored the only two goals of the second half, with Daniel Royer equalizing with a penalty in the 55th minute and Veron finishing off from the edge of the area.
At Vancouver, Yordy Reyna’s 88th-minute header lifted the hosts over New York City.
Fredy Montero and defender Jordan Harvey also scored for Vancouver (7-3-3), while David Villa and Maxime Chanot scored for New York.
Reyna, playing his first game in Vancouver after missing most of the season with a broken foot, scored his first goal of the year when he directed a cross from fullback Jakob Nerwinski past goalkeeper Eirik Johansen.
