Ball State men’s basketball player dies

Ball State men’s basketball player Zach Hollywood died Tuesday afternoon, the university confirmed in a brief letter to all of its student-athletes today.

The university’s statement read:

“On behalf of Ball State University, it is with profound sadness that we learned today of the passing of Zachary “Zach” Hollywood, a student from Bradley, Illinois. Zach has been a part of our community for the past year. During his time on campus, he was a member of the men’s basketball team and made many positive impressions throughout campus. This is a tragedy. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and teammates.

“For members of our Ball State family who need support during this difficult time, we encourage them to take advantage of the numerous resources available on- and off-campus.”

While on the men’s basketball team last year, Hollywood was a redshirt freshman and did not compete.

Delaware County Coroner Scott Hahn told The Star Press Hollywood was discovered at Varsity House Apartments, 3000 block of North Oakwood Ave., just before 1 p.m. today. Hollywood died at the scene.

Ball State men’s basketball coach James Whitford is expected to release a statement later Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning, according to school officials.
