7 People Injured By Smoking, Flaming iPhone Battery
An Apple store in Zurich had to be cleared on Tuesday after a customer’s iPhone 6s began smoking and eventually burning. The incident forced 50 shoppers and staff to evacuate the store, seven of whom received medical attention, according to CNN.
An employee was taking the battery out of the phone when it began to smoke and caught fire, according to police. Apple workers were lauded by a forensics expert on the case for acting quickly and dousing the battery with sand before any more injuries were sustained.
The person working on the phone suffered minor burns. No one was hospitalized.
Zurich police spokesman Marco Bisa said forensics were currently investigating the phone’s remains to determine the cause of the battery’s smoky demise.
