Plane crash on Moloka’i leaves no survivors:- A spokesperson with the Maui Fire & Public Safety Department said that a plane crash on Moloka’i late Sunday morning left no survivors.
According to a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration, “local authorities report that at least two people were on board.”
Maui Fire says around 11:15 a.m., crews received a call from the aircraft traffic control tower at Moloka’i Airport that they had lost communication with an aircraft. About a hour later, the wreckage of the small private plane was found about four miles west of the Moloka’i Airport, in a remote location.
“The aircraft was found smoldering, so apparently it caught fire in the crash.. and crews had to extinguish whatever areas were still smoldering,” Maui Fire Chief Edward Taomoto told Island News.
The FAA spokesperson said that the aircraft in question, a Cessna 206, crashed “under unknown circumstances” while flying towards the airport.
Maui Fire added that while responding to the crash site, weather condition were cloudy– with low cloud ceiling and fog. but no rain. Emergency responders had to use ATV’s to access the site, because of muddy roads from recent rainfall. Chief Taomoto mentioned that workers from nearby Molokai Ranch assisted by opening up locked gates, so that emergency crews could search the area for the missing plane.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash.
