16-year-old girl among 2 dead, 19 wounded in city weekend gun violence

16-year-old girl among 2 dead, 19 wounded in city weekend gun violence:- A 16-year-old girl who was accidentally shot to death by an acquaintance was among 21 people shot, two fatally, in separate incidents across Chicago since Friday evening.

At 6:57 p.m. Sunday, the acquaintance was handling a gun inside a home in the 6600 block of South Marquette when she accidentally shot the teenage girl’s eye, Chicago Police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The acquaintance was taken into custody and charges are pending, police said. According to unconfirmed scanner reports, the girl’s friend did not know the gun was loaded and accidentally shot her.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately release information on the fatality.

A 21-year-old woman was also killed in an accidental shooting Saturday night when a gun was accidentally fired inside a Portage Park home on the Northwest Side, police said. Nadia Manjarrez and a 37-year-old man were inside a home about 10 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Hutchinson when the gun fired, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Manjarrez, who lived in the neighborhood, was shot in the head and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she died at 10:50 p.m., authorities said. An autopsy Sunday did not rule on her cause and manner of death pending further investigation.

Area North detectives recovered the gun and were investigating the shooting, police said. The man was detained for questioning.

At least 19 other people were wounded — including a 3-year-old boy shot early Sunday while traveling in the back seat of a car in Washington Park — in separate Chicago shootings since 4:30 p.m. Friday. Follow this weekend’s violence with the Chicago Sun-Times shooting tracker, which will be updated throughout the weekend.

Last weekend, two men were killed and 26 others were wounded in citywide shootings.
