1 killed, another seriously injured in Route 70 crash:- One person was killed and another was seriously injured Monday morning in a head-on crash on Route 70 in Manchester Township, police said.

Officers responded to mile-marker 41 on Route 70 in the Whiting section of the township at 11:48 a.m. on the report of a serious crash involving two vehicles, police said in a news release.

Based on the investigation, police said a red Toyota Echo was traveling east on Route 70 when it crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane of travel.

The Echo continued onto the westbound shoulder and the berm on the westbound side before crashing head-on into a westbound Toyota Sienna minivan, which had tried to swerve out of the way before the crash, police said.

The driver of the Echo — Gerda Kretschmer, 81, of Whiting — suffered serious internal injuries in the crash and needed to be extricated from her vehicle by firefighters, police said.

Kretschmer was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

The Sienna driver — James A. Canfield, 49, of Brick — suffered injuries to his chest and shoulder in the crash, police said. He was taken to Community Medical Center for treatment and evaluation of his injuries.

The roadway was partially closed for several hours while first responders tended to the injured, investigated the crash and cleared the scene, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
