Michael Caine Says He Would Not Work With Woody Allen Again

The actor joins a growing list of stars to distance themselves from the famous filmmaker in the #MeToo and Time’s Up era.
Michael Caine doesn’t regret working with Woody Allen in the past, but after Dylan Farrow’s resurfaced sexual abuse allegations against her famous father, Caine says he would not work with Allen again in the future.

“I am so stunned,” said the actor in a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian over the weekend when asked about Farrow’s claims that Allen abused her when she was a child. “I’m a patron of the NSPCC [the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children] and have very strong views about pedophilia. I can’t come to terms with it, because I loved Woody and had a wonderful time with him. I even introduced him to Mia [Farrow]. I don’t regret working with him, which I did in complete innocence; but I wouldn’t work with him again, no.”

Caine introduced Mia to Allen in 1979 when Allen was at a nearby table at famed New York City eatery Elaine’s. The Hollywood couple went on to have one biological child together, Ronan Farrow, and Allen adopted two of Mia’s 11 other children — Moses and Dylan — before they split in 1992 after Allen fell in love with Mia’s adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. Allen and Previn have been married since 1997.

Dylan first alleged in 1992 that Allen sexually assaulted her when she was 7 years old. She resurfaced her claim in a 2014 column in The New York Times and in December in an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times, linking Allen in the latter to the growing #MeToo movement.

“What I don’t understand is: how is this crazy story of me being brainwashed and coached more believable than what I’m saying about being sexually assaulted by my father?” Dylan said in January during her first televised interview about the claims on CBS This Morning.

A number of actresses have expressed their support for Dylan in recent months. Caine won an Oscar for his role in Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters; he played the onscreen husband to Mia in the 1986 comedy-drama. The actor joins a growing list of stars who have worked with Allen — including Greta Gerwig, Rachel Brosnahan, Rebecca Hall, Ellen Page, Timothee Chalamet and Peter Sarsgaard — and who have now distanced themselves from the filmmaker.

Allen has repeatedly denied Dylan’s claims, and no criminal charges were ever brought.
