Lady Gaga Reveals New Song ‘Perfect Illusion’ Is Not About Taylor Kinney: ‘I Love Taylor So, So Much’

Lady Gaga Reveals New Song ‘Perfect Illusion’ Is Not About Taylor Kinney: ‘I Love Taylor So, So Much’ : Lady Gaga’s latest single had the internet buzzing about a possible “Bad Romance” between her and Taylor Kinney – but the singer says that’s not the case.

With a driving chorus featuring the lyrics “it wasn’t love,” it’s no wonder Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion” had fans mistaking it as a breakup song. But Mother Monster insists it’s not about Kinney, with whom she ended their engagement in July.

“‘Perfect Illusion’ is about a lot of different people in my life, a lot of different things. But the record is about being so intoxicated with love, you know, so high, dilated, falling free, in a modern ecstasy that you wake up one day and you can’t believe that it was not real,” Gaga, 30, said, quoting some of the track’s lyrics, during a Monday sit-down with Andy Cohen for his SiriusXM channel Radio Andy show Andy Cohen Live. “How did that happen? How did I do that? The song is sort of raging against that experience.”

And the American Horror Story actress maintains she’s not raging against her former Chicago Fire beau, 35.

“It’s sort of the elephant in the room about ‘Perfect Illusion’: Like, ‘Is it about Taylor?’ is what everyone’s wondering,” Gaga added. “I just want to say…I love Taylor so, so much, and this song is not a hit out against Taylor. He’s my best friend. This song is just about, I’m sure, not only the feelings I’ve had, that he’s had, that my friends have had, that my sister has in her relationship. It’s a record about all of us. And I would never use my song or want to use the public to hurt anyone that I love so much.”

Then, when Cohen compared the couple’s split to Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s “conscious uncoupling,” Gaga brushed it off.

“I don’t know if I would even say it that way. I don’t think that we’ve ‘un’-anything,” she said, not addressing the current status of their relationship. “We’re just two people figuring it out.”

That sentiment mirrors the statement she shared back in July, when she posted a photo on Instagram noting they are “hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules.”

“Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break,” Gaga wrote at the time. “We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other.”
