Improv with Gary Schwartz at Freehold Theatre Whether you’ve taken improv in the past or are new to it, you will be introduced to the improvisation method created by Viola Spolin that gave rise to the first improv troupe in America, Chicago’s famed Second City. The Spolin Games are simple, operational structures that are each built upon a specific focus or technical problem related to acting and allow for tremendous liberation. There are games to free the actor's tension, games to cleanse the actor of subjective preconceptions and of the meaning of words, games of relationship and character, games of concentration - in short, games for each of the areas with which the growing actor is concerned. It was Gary’s 18-year association with renowned theater educator, director and author Viola Spolin – famous for training the very first improv theater troupe in the US which led to the creation of today’s Second City improv troupe – that provided the foundation for his work today. In 1988 Gary co-founded the Spolin Players improv troupe, and is the only teacher to have ever earned an endorsement from both Viola Spolin and her son, the legendary original director of Second City, Paul Sills. Gary is a passionate, dynamic improv coach and facilitator. As a voice actor, Gary has worked with Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Tim Burton, Kenneth Brannagh and many other well-known directors. He voices several characters on popular video games such as Team Fortress 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
