In the Iowa State Senate, she represented District 12, a position to which she was elected in a January 2011 special election. She also served as the Assistant Minority Leader of the Iowa State Senate.
Ernst ran for the open 2014 United States Senate seat in Iowa after incumbent Tom Harkin (D) announced his retirement. She defeated Bruce Braley (D), Douglas Butzier (L) and a host of independent candidates in the general election on November 4, 2014. Ernst won her party's nomination to run for U.S. Senate in the June 3, 2014 primary. Ernst became the first woman from Iowa elected to either house of Congress.
After her inauguration as Senator, Ernst was selected by John Boehner (R), the Speaker of the House, to deliver a rebuttal to President Barack Obama after his State of the Union Address. In her rebuttal, Ernst focused on the Republican agenda for the 114th Congress. Two of the major issues she brought up were approving the Keystone pipeline and repealing Obamacare. Ernst's rebuttal focused little on Obama's address and instead focused on GOP legislative priorities in both chambers.
