In 2014, Merkley won re-election to the U.S. Senate from Oregon, defeating Monica Wehby (R), Mike Montchalin (L), James Leuenberger (Constitution) and Christina Jean Lugo (Pacific Green). He won the Democratic nomination in the primary on May 20, 2014. He also ran as an Independent candidate, Working Families Party candidate and a Progressive candidate.
