Jeff Merkley (Born October 24, 1956, in Portland, OR) is a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate from the state of Oregon. Merkley was first elected to the Senate in 2008. In 2014, Merkley won re-election to the U.S. Senate from Oregon, defeating Monica Wehby (R), Mike Montchalin (L), James Leuenberger (Constitution) and Christina Jean Lugo (Pacific Green). He won the Democratic nomination in the primary on May 20, 2014. He also ran as an Independent candidate, Working Families Party candidate and a Progressive candidate.

Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Merkley is one of the most reliable Democratic votes, meaning he can be considered a safe vote for the Democratic Party in Congress.

Biography

Merkley was born in Portland, Oregon. He holds a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a master's degree from Princeton. His political career began in 1998 when he won election to the Oregon House of Representatives. He served as a representative from 1999 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2008.
