Lankford defeated Constance Johnson (D) and Mark Beard (I) in the general election on November 4, 2014. Lankford won the Republican nomination in the primary on June 24, 2014.

Lankford was previously a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Oklahoma. Lankford was first elected by the voters of Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District in 2010 and served two consecutive terms prior to his successful 2014 bid for U.S. Senate.
