Gary C. Peters (Born December 1, 1958, in Pontiac, MI) is a Democratic member of the U.S. Senate representing Michigan. He was previously a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Michigan's 14th Congressional District. Peters was first elected to the U.S. House in 2008.

Peters ran for the 2014 United States Senate seat in Michigan that was being vacated by incumbent Carl Levin (D). He defeated challengers Terri Lynn Land (R), Jim Fulner (L), Richard Matkin (G) and Chris Wahmhoff (UST) in the general election on November 4, 2014.

Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Peters is an average Democratic member of Congress, meaning he will vote with the Democratic Party on the majority of bills.

Biography

Peters was born in 1958 in Pontiac, Michigan. After graduating from Alma College in 1980, Peters went on to receive his MBA from the University of Detroit and his J.D. from Wayne State University in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Prior to his political career, Peters worked as a professor and investment banker. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1993 to 2000 and from 2001 to 2005.

Peters served as the third Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government at Central Michigan University from 2007 until his election to Congress. In that position he taught one class a semester, plus preparing additional student activities including two policy forums, and developing a journal of Michigan politics and policy, for $65,000 a year. Peters announced his candidacy for Congress two months after being hired. Student activists protested Peters’ hiring, saying he could not be objective in the classroom while running for office and that the university job was subsidizing his campaign.
