How to Practice Law in the United States with a Foreign Law Degree:

Each state in the USA has a different requirement which you need to fulfill for practicing law over there if you hold a foreign degree.

1. New York: it is the place where everybody wants to go and achieve what they aim for. For practicing law with your foreign degree in New York you need to fulfill certain requirements. There is this board of examiners which is known as New York Boards of Law Examiners who conduct the bar exam have set some specific criteria for foreign law degree holders. Either your foreign education gets transferred to the US system or it does not get transferred. There is not in between. If the lawyer has completed his education incomplete 3 years and is focused on the common law then his degree gets transferred and he is allowed to take the bar exam. In all the other cases the candidates will have to complete the LLM before appearing for the exam.

2. California: In case you are thinking to practice law in California with your foreign degree then the rules followed there are relatively liberal than they were in New York. If you meet the requirements you are allowed to sit for the exam. Generally, people are allowed to sit for the exam without fulfilling any other additional requirements.
