OVERVIEW
Lake Lanier Islands, located on Georgia’s largest lake, have been among the region’s top recreation destinations for more than 30 years. In addition to going fishing, boating, and swimming, you can barrel down water slides, zip-line through treetops, or hike along a network of shoreline trails. The mid-size city of Buford, which sits about 40 minutes northeast of Atlanta, also boasts a downtown art colony and the brand new Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center. A close drive away, you can shop ‘til you drop at the largest shopping mall in the state, the Mall of Georgia which features over 200 stores.

At Lanier Islands, you can get an island escape just one hour north of Atlanta at a family-friendly resort in the middle of Lake Lanier. But instead of cheesy fake palm trees, the hotel sports an upscale-lodge aesthetic with rustic, wood-frame furniture; mirrors shaped like branches; and a chandelier in the lobby that mimics a forest canopy. Free WiFi and an onsite fitness center are available to guests as an added perk.

  • Take a dip in the heated, outdoor saltwater pool.
  • Explore the island with onsite bike rentals.
  • Tee off: Legacy on Lanier Golf Club is located nearby the lodge and open year-round. The hotel offers golf-cart rentals.
  • Winter wonderland: Select options include Winter Adventure passes, which provide access to snow-play areas with skating, snow tubing, sledding, santa’s work shop, and more. Winter Adventure ends the evening of February 15th, but other activities such as the equestrian center, zip-lining, and pontoon rentals remain open year-round.
