OVERVIEW

Have you ever wanted to see something that was 300 million years old? Sure, you can find stuff that old at a museum, but chances are you can't reach out and touch it—and you definitely won't be allowed to put a beer on top of it. Yet patrons can do all of those things at Breakroom Brewery. Inside the bustling taproom, the 40-foot bar is inlaid with a piece of petrified wood from the Carboniferous Period. That hunk of repurposed history is the centerpiece of the brewery, and also its guiding principle; situated in a building that once served as the break room for the wood workers, brewers, and friends of bygone Heineman Bar Company, the brewery honors its industrial past through reclaimed decor (old distillery barrels now serve as hulking light fixtures) and renewed workmanship (a working wood-shop houses workers crafting new hand-made bartops).

The Beer

If this setting wasn't enough, Breakroom Brewery also uses its onsite facilities to brew craft beer that Chicago Magazine calls "plenty impressive." The beer selection rotates, but here's a quick look at two of the brews patrons might find on tap:

Sir Monti Rose: This English IPA is brewed with East Kent Golding hops and caramel malts for a balanced, never overwhelming flavor (5.8% ABV).

Imperial Lakta: This creamy milk stout carries flavors of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, and toasted nuts (10% ABV).

The Food

There's a reason Breakroom Brewery made it onto Eater's list of "12 Breweries That Also Serve Great Food". The brewery's chefs take pub cuisine to new, upscale heights; think beer-soaked french fries, gourmet burgers, and scotch eggs made with lentil falafel in place of sausage. For an even heartier meal, try a signature entree, such as pork shank served with stout-infused polenta, mustard, and roquefort cheese.
