III. Limitations

There are limitations to what PAs do and these are put down on a state-level. Florida, Kentucky, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not allow PAs to prescribe, give out, order or administer controlled substances. There are other states that also place a limit to the drugs that PAs have prescriptive power on.Educational Requirements

Physician assistants are trained using a medical model but without the gruelingmed-school years and residency for a specific specialty. There are more than 135 PA programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.

PAs may work in solo or group-physicians practices, alone in remote or rural areas, clinics, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and home health care facilities. The AAPA census of 2008 showed that 56% of PAs worked in doctor’s clinics or offices while 24% works in hospitals.
