Trump inauguration protest brought to you live by Snapchat
Trump inauguration protest brought to you live by Snapchat:- Users of the Snapchat app bared their souls Friday, showing a raw, unfiltered video look at both the Inauguration and protests on college campuses across the nation.
This is the second time Snapchat has curated a collection of its Live Stories feature for news–the first was the November presidential election.
Live Stories is the curated collection of videos and photos taken by Snapchat users that the company showcases as what the Snapchat community is talking about.
v“The platform is compelling precisely because it’s interactive, it’s temporary, and it’s a glimpse into another life—just like television was for previous generations,” wrote Fast Company recently about the Live Stories feature.
Post election, “Snapchat captured and showed the anxiety and polarizing emotions that people in the U.S. experienced in the hours leading up to and after the final count like no other media outlet or platform,” wrote Mashable.
Friday Snapchat users put on their citizen journalist hats again, and covered the official inauguration activities, protests and how college communities were reacting to President Donald Trump.
The coverage wasn’t fair, it wasn’t balanced, and it’s doubtful Republicans would find much anything to cheer about, but it was a totally different look at the day than you were likely to see on broadcast or cable TV, which were more journalistic.
Twitter and Facebook were also full of Trump coverage, but much of it was being produced by professional media organizations, unlike the Snapchat view, which were bite-sized–5 to 10 seconds of sometimes shaky smartphone footage produced by its mostly young audience.
The protests showed breaking glass from storefronts in Washington D.C., chants (“Let them go” when police arrested protesters) and students speaking out from Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, Colorado, Alabama and California.
There was the heated–Snap showed students comparing Trump to Adolph Hitler, to the comical–students handing out free marijuana joints against a sign that said, “Make America High again,” and another displaying his new roll of Trump themed toilet paper.
It wasn’t all anti-Trump videos on Snap. One student from Alabama, wearing a “Make America Great Again,” hat, told the camera that with Trump in office, the country “is already feeling great,” while other students in Kentucky let out hoots and hollers against the image of Trump taking the oath.
Snapchat cites a daily audience of 150 million people using the service, and they’re mostly the coveted young demographic ad agencies crave. According to eMarketer. some 45% of Snapchat’s audience are aged 18 to 24 years old.
