The 420 HP 2019 Chevy Suburban RST Is America’s Next Super Wagon

You’ll finally be able to get the 2019 Chevy Suburban with GM’s voracious 6.2-liter V8 this summer in the Suburban RST–an aftermarket-inspired “high performance” take on the company’s 18.6-foot long flagship SUV.

I know it’s silly, and there are plenty of reasons to dismiss this as a goofy waste of gasoline but damn if I’m not a sucker for Suburbans. What am I saying? I don’t even like the current body style that much. But man, there’s just something about Chevy’s long hauler that is really appealing to me. And what car enthusiast can deny being intrigued by a high-horsepower V8-powered wagon? Even if this one might be a tiny bit on the tall side.

Like the Tahoe RST that was released about a year ago, the ’Burb will have a claimed 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque from its massive engine mated to a new Hydra-Matic 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission and singing through a Borla exhaust.

It’ll sit on 22-inch wheels with in Bridgestone P285/45R 22 tires and I like the way almost all of the chrome trim has been replaced with black.

Magnetic Ride Control, which you may be familiar with in luxury applications (Cadillac CT6) and ass-haulers (Camaro ZL1), is standard equipment here. In case you haven’t heard of it, this system involves shock tubes being filled with microscopic magnetic particles that are excited by electricity to soften and stiffen the suspension on the fly. The idea is to make the car comfy over bumps and responsive in corners. In my experience, it works extremely well.

Chevy isn’t making any performance claims for the Suburban RST yet but the SUV is “expected” to be able to tow 8,100 pounds. Motor Trend says the slightly smaller Tahoe RST is good for 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds and a quarter mile in the low 14’s just a hair under 100 mph. The Suburban has the same power output and only marginally higher curb weight (about 5,800 pounds versus 5,700 and change) so its numbers will probably be close to the Tahoe’s.

As for pricing, that doesn’t seem to be on the table yet either but I suspect Chevy will be asking $70,000 to $80,000 for one of these. And while I wouldn’t pay that myself, I do have to admit I think this thing is pretty sweet. I’m looking forward to listening to it scream.

The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon may be gone, but if you want to haul stuff and ass at the same time the Suburban RST is… sort of the same idea.
