New Galaxy S9 Leak Reveals Samsung’s Impressive Ambitions
As the surprisingly early reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S9 approaches, more details have leaked out around the South Korean company’s ambitious plans to bring its flagship Android device to the desktop with some exciting new features.
The Galaxy S9 is expected to have a new DeX accessory. DeX (Desktop Extension) allows a full-sized keyboard, display monitor, and mouse to be attached to the peripheral, and then the Galaxy handset docks to the DeX. You then have an effective desktop computer running Android, with access to all of the files and applications.
The new desktop extension peripheral is expected to be called the DeX Pad, and as well as acting as the docking station and hub for the mouse, keyboard, and screen, it will also charge the handset. It is expected to be redesigned from a position that displays the handset at an angle, to a horizontal lie-flat position. That offers up the intriguing possibility of using the S9 screen as a trackpad, alongside the keyboard and monitor.
That increases the value of the Galaxy S9 as an enterprise device. No doubt the potential of the S9 with the DeX Pad will be heavily touted to corporate customers.
It’s worth nothing that the DeX Pad is unlikely to ship in the retail packaging of the Galaxy S9. Instead it will be available as an additional purchase. That means we may not see the new DeX Pad at Samsung’s ‘teaser’ launch of the S9 at next month’s CES in Las Vegas.
The availability of the DeX Pad is just one more question surrounding the South Korean flagship. Question such as; Where will Samsung tuck the fingerprint sensor? What chipset is powering it? Will it come with 512 GB of storage? And will there be a third ‘S9 Mini’ model in the portfolio?
