Apple iOS 10.2 Has A Great Secret Feature:- It’s finally here. After no less than seven betas (delivered in record time), Apple has released iOS 10.2 and the good news is the company has decided to keep one of the best easter eggs from the betas…

‘Great Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating operating system updates for the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.

Dig through the 100s of new emoji in iOS 10.2 and you’ll find two emoji simply described as ‘Male Singer’ and ‘Female Singer’ – but even a cursory look will tell you these are no generic singers. Instead Apple is paying tribute to the wonderful, genre-busting and now sadly departed David Bowie.

Purists will (quite rightly) point out Bowie was famous for his androgyny, so male and female emoji counterparts may miss the point somewhat – but it remains a lovely thing to commemorate as we approach the end of the year which took his life.

Of course ‘the Bowies’ are but a small part of the many, many new emoji in iOS 10.2 and even existing emoji have all had their designs updated. Now iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users will find diverse characters, new professions and expressions like facepalm, shrug and fingers crossed as well as new emoji representing sports, food, animals and more.

That said, if the general reaction on social media is anything to go by, I doubt any of the new emoji will be received as warmly as ‘Male Singer’ and ‘Female Singer’.
