iPhone feature offers alternative way to contact 911

Your iPhone wants to keep you safe with a feature emergency responders say, most don’t even know about.

Here’s how you can find that little known button that could save your life.

For most, these little devices go with us wherever we’re heading, even into unfortunate, sticky situations.

“They’re always being updated. And sometimes, they’re giving you features that are very valuable,” said Mary Phillippi, Red River Regional Dispatch.

One of those lesser known features? An ‘SOS’ button that can call 911, almost secretly.

On an iPhone 5, all you have to do is press the power button on the top of the phone.

Click it 5 times, then swipe to reach help.

Newer models are a little different.

The iPhone 8 requires you to hold the sleep button and a volume button.

It could save crucial seconds, and help say, children who might not know how to use the dial pad or those who don’t have great dexterity.

Mary said, “I think there are all kinds of people that it might be helpful for. And I’m just glad that we have all of these different ways to have help.”

Emergency responders say it’s a good tool at first glance, but warn it could sometimes prove too complicated when you’re in a dangerous situation.

“What’s that you’re supposed to push. Or how many times in succession am I supposed? It’s better to just use the phone and call 911. Rather than taking the time to remember how to use it,” said Don Martin, FM Ambulance.

No matter your preference, you now have more options for contacting police when you need them most.

You can also go into your settings, and also input your Medical ID information.
