Google honors Gilbert Baker, creator of the rainbow flag

In honor of LGBTQ Pride Month, Google is paying tribute to the creator of the community's most important symbol.

On Friday, Google updated its logo to honor the 66th birthday of Gilbert Baker, the creator of the rainbow flag. The animated doodle features several strips of fabric in multiple colors coming together to form the flag.

Baker created the flag in 1978 as a more positive alternative to the pink triangle, used by Nazis to classify LGBTQ people during World War II.

"The rainbow is so perfect because it really fits our diversity in terms of race, gender, ages, all of those things," Baker said in a 2015 interview with The Museum of Modern Art. "Plus, it’s a natural flag—it’s from the sky!”

Baker died in March.

The original rainbow flag featured eight colors, each meant to represent the diversity of the community, but is now six: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.
