The Harrisons: Five NFL figures who flopped in Week 10
In honor of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison’s bold stance, our weekly award for players and coaches in the NFL for people who didn’t even deserve a participation trophy. For Week 10:
Kelvin Benjamin, Panthers
Everyone was cheering for him on his return from injury this season. But to have the ball stripped after a catch and the Chiefs turn that into the winning points … hmmm. Piece of advice: Hit the weight room.
Jay Cutler, Bears
He almost fooled us with that emotional game against the Vikings in his previous game. And that “Hail Mary” touchdown pass at the end of the first half Sunday was so cool, we wanted so badly to give him a participation trophy. But we were afraid if we did, he would have thrown it to one of the Tampa Bay players. A pick-six was one of two first-half interceptions. And then he later a lost fumble. And, oh, yeah, he took a safety for good measure.
Taylor Lewan, Titans
He was quite the help to his team. It is always good when the starting left tackle gets ejected in the first quarter for blatantly pushing one of the officials. Really, dude? The Titans did better without him the rest of the game, and maybe he should take that to heart.
Philip Rivers, Chargers
We hate to put him on this list. The guy battles every week. He doesn’t blink when top offensive guys are lost to injury. He just plays. And looks like he has fun doing it. But four interceptions in the fourth quarter? That’s not fun for anyone — except the Dolphins.
Saints special teams
Think of it. Your offense scores with less than two minutes to and, with the extra point, is about to go ahead of the Broncos by one point. And Peyton Manning isn’t standing on the other sideline. It’s Trevor Siemian, who looked like a deer in headlights for most of the visit to New Orleans. Not only do you allow the Broncos to block the kick, you let them run it back for two points and you turn victory into defeat. In other words, you took the “special” out of special teams.
