Dwyane Wade surprises Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw Jr.

Making an appearance on The Ellen Show this week, James Shaw Jr. — the man hailed as a hero for prying a gun out of the hands of the Waffle House shooting suspect in Nashville last month — was asked who his favorite basketball player is.

“Dwyane Wade,” Shaw said.

“Dwyane Wade, why is that?” host Ellen DeGeneres asked.

“I like the way he carries himself off the court,” Shaw answered.

“Oh yeah? Let’s see how he carries himself out here,” said DeGeneres.

In walked Wade, much to the surprise of Shaw.

After pleasantries were exchanged and the audience quieted down, Wade shared a message with Shaw.

“I know you don’t want be called a hero, but I look at you as an American hero,” Wade, who also presented Shaw with a check for $20,000, said. ” … When I sit down with my kids, and I sit down and talk to them about role models, who I want them to look up to, I’d tell them to go look up James Shaw Jr.”

Wade, a future Hall of Famer and one of the most respected figures in basketball, is nominated for the seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award for his role in providing support to the Parkland, Fla. community following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February.

Wade visited the school in March and spoke to many of the students, saying, “As someone out here in the public eye, I’m proud to say I’m from this state because of you guys, because of the future of this world because of you guys. So I just say thank you.”
