Swiss chainsaw massacre: Five hurt, manhunt underway
Five people were wounded and a section of the Swiss city of Schaffhausen was sealed off Monday after a man armed with a chainsaw rampaged through the city’s Old Town.
Police said the assault was not a terrorist attack, according to Swiss broadcaster Swissinfo.
Schaffhausen police said the man began his attack in an office building, and officers later escorted customers from several shops in the area during the manhunt. Two of the injuries were described as serious.
Police were looking for a man more than 6-feet tall with a “bald head and unkempt appearance.” Helicopters were mobilized to aid the search.
Schaffhausen, with a population of about 35,000, is in the wine-growing region near the German border. The medieval town is a tourist draw for its historic center and accessibility to the Rhine Falls, billed as the largest waterfall in Europe.
