Explosion rocks Connecticut neighborhood; multiple officers injured live updates

Authorities are investigating an explosion in North Haven, Connecticut, according to a law enforcement official. Multiple people were injured, according to CBS affiliate WFSB-TV. A large fire also broke out.

The North Haven police department was investigating a domestic violence incident around 7 p.m. local time, according to a statement to CBS News. This led to a barricaded individual where SWAT was called in. There was a large explosion during the investigation that prompted street closures.

Connecticut State Police tell The Associated Press that six police officers were injured in a the explosion that happened behind the house in a barn. North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda said the injuries included cuts, abrasions and bruises and are not life-threatening.

Freda also explained that police were responding to a report of a man barricaded in a house where he took his wife hostage and that officers were trying to get him out when the explosion took place. State police said the suspect had not yet been apprehended and called it an active situation.

“It’s quite surprising,” Freda said. “This is a quiet residential neighborhood. It’s been a very emotional scene.”

WFSB-TV reporter Matthew Campbell wrote on Twitter that the suspect is still inside the home and that the fire is coming from another structure within the property. Campbell also reported that the wife was able to escape the house after being held for four days.

Police officials urge residents to avoid the area. Connecticut State Police and SWAT officers have responded to the scene.

One WFSB-TV reporter caught video of two people being taken away in handcuffs, but it’s unclear what connection they may have to Wednesday night’s explosion.

Yale New Haven Hospital spokesman Mark D’Antonio said late Wednesday that there were seven patients being evaluated and their conditions were not immediately known.
