Dad shoots 7-year-old daughter in murder-suicide after shopping
A California dad killed himself and his 7-year-old daughter Sunday after a day of shopping.
Carlos Garcia, 36, was found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a mall parking lot in Capitola, California. Police say Garcia fatally shot his 7-year-old, who relatives identified as Yaxtel Tapia, before turning the gun on himself, according to news station KSBW.
It is not clear what the motive was behind the murder-suicide.
Before the shooting, Garcia had been shopping with his family when he disappeared with his daughter.
His wife called 911 around 3:15 p.m. to report that he was making suicidal threats from inside their car parked outside of Macy’s.
Police responded Sunday afternoon to find man and 7-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds in the family’s Kia Soul. The pair were pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived, the Mercury News reported.
Relatives created a GoFundMe on Monday to cover Tapia’s funeral costs, according to KSBW.
“The loss of our beloved little girl was very sudden and unexpected,” her aunt Maria Tapia writes on the GoFundMe page.
