Curious cat Emmy causes $40,000 damage to Adelaide house after starting fire

Curious cat Emmy causes $40,000 damage to Adelaide house after starting fire:- IF the ancient proverb is true and cats do have nine lives, mischievous feline Emmy must have just seven chances left after escaping a Hillcrest house fire she started by stepping on the kitchen cooktop.

Dubbed a “very cheeky cat” by her owner Jordan Pana, eight-month-old Emmy won her first battle with death as a kitten when she became the sole survivor of her litter.

Tuesday night Emmy won round two when, just minutes before the Earle St home became engulfed in flames, firefighters extinguished the blaze that she started by jumping on the ceramic cooktop, saving her life and capping damage to $40,000.

Passers-by called the MFS to the address just before 7pm after a smoke alarm had been activated.

Mr Pana, 42, who lives at the home with his two sons, Amos, 16, and Oska, 13, said a neighbour alerted him to the fire.

“I raced (home) and the firefighters got here within seconds, they busted in the house and put the fire out,” he said.

“They reckon if it had of burned for another three minutes the whole place would’ve been up, we’re very lucky.”

Initially emergency services didn’t realise Emmy was inside the house because she was hiding under a TV cabinet.

Mr Pana said it took a while before he realised Emmy was the one to blame.

“I remembered there was a couple of cereal boxes on the stove and then I put two and two together and figured she must’ve got on the stove and turned it on and off it went,” he said.

Oldest son Amos said he was shocked by the incident but was relieved Emmy wasn’t hurt.

“She’s pretty little, she doesn’t really know what she’s doing,” he said.

“The first thing I asked my dad when I got the call (was) ‘is Emmy OK?’.

“And she was hiding where I thought she was hiding, under the TV cabinet.”
