A Patient’s Guide to Multiple Sclerosis
A Patient’s Guide to Multiple Sclerosis:- Researchers know how multiple sclerosis does its dirty work. The process starts with damage to the myelin coating around nerve fibers in the central nervous system, which fouls up nerve signals between the brain, spinal cord and rest of the body. Beyond that, MS symptoms vary wildly, and for some patients, come and go in what are known as relapses.
But for the 400,000 Americans diagnosed with MS, the physical and emotional damage is all too real. As the National Multiple Sclerosis Society notes, the morecommon symptoms can include fatigue, weakness and loss of balance while walking, numbness or tingling in the face or body extremities and the onset of blurred vision. The disease can also be accompanied by depression.
But the symptoms can be subtle and elusive, notes Dr. Lauren Krupp, professor of neurology and the director of NYU Langone’s Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center. So for a diagnosis, doctors look for evidence of two areas of damage in the central nervous system that have occurred at different times. The good news is there are medications that can help control symptoms, and lifestyle changes that can provide relief as well, including exercise, sleep and good nutrition.
