iPhone X Best Feature Promised For Android Smartphones
Smartphone users envious of the iPhone X’s facial unlocking feature may not have to wait much longer, thanks to a new solution designed for Android handsets.
The Taiwanese 3D Imaging company, LIPS Corporation, has announced a complete solution for 3D scanning and true 3D facial recognition on Android devices. According to LIPS, the device ‘aims squarely at providing an iPhone X Face ID-like unlock feature for the Android platform as well as mobile 3D scanning’.
As shown in the video clip above, the solution currently comprises both software and hardware components, including an ‘active stereo-based depth camera’ designed to be attached to the phone’s USB port.
The camera, about the same width and thickness as the phone, performs general 3D scanning and also 3D facial recognition using infrared laser projection coupled with a pair of sensors which enable the required depth information to be computed.
While an add-on device such as this may be useful for those in the market for a plug-in 3D scanner, the facial unlocking feature doesn’t make a lot of sense if it relies on connecting an external device in order to unlock the phone.
However, by the second quarter of this year LIPS hopes to have completed a smaller and thinner version of the module designed to fit inside future Android handsets which would then be able to scan 3D objects directly as well as unlocking with a facial recognition system similar to Apple’s Face ID.
Founded in 2013, LIPS designs and customises depth-sensing 3D cameras and scanners along with the middleware needed to integrate it into third party-devices.
