Three New iPhones Are Promised Apple’s Biggest Feature

Three New iPhones Are Promised Apple’s Biggest Feature

Apple is set to explained the range of iPhones that ship with its FaceID technology this year, and it’s ensuring in advance that its supplier has the resources to cope with the demand.

The Cupertino-based company has been reported as making a “significant investment” in LG Innotek this week (according to The Investor in South Korea). With an upfront payment of nearly $821 million, Apple will secure various elements required by the FaceID technology, including the dot projector and flood illumination used to build up the three-dimensional data. Alternative solutions on Android such as the method developed by OnePlus rely on the selfie camera and processing a two-dimensional image.

Apple locking out the stock of these hardware elements is a smart move that helps limit the competition’s options, ensures a smoother supply of stock during manufacturing, and enhances the unique feature of FaceID to the consumer.

Given the immediate six-week wait for delivery of the iPhone X after it was launched in retail markets (which is now down to next day pickup at your closest Apple store), ensuring the smooth operation of the production line with any new models will be key. The advance to LG Innotek will help with increasing capability and reserving the it all for Apple’s new handsets.

Apple is expected to launch three new iPhone models this year, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The iPhone X Plus will be the larger ‘phablet’ styled model of the current flagship iPhone, the iPhone X will be refreshed (but who knows if it’s the iPhone X2, the iPhone 11, or the iPhone Colin), and a replacement for the iPhone SE. All of them will likely be in the new style of minimal bezels, no physical home button, and FaceID to unlock and authenticate users.

It’s also been reported previously by Bloomberg that Apple will release at least one iPad model this year that features FaceID, potentially an upgraded iPad Pro model.

With an increased production line and FaceID being one of the stand-out features in the eyes of the public, ensuring the FaceID components are always available is a key strategic move from Tim Cook and his team.
