Hollywood Foreign Press Unveils 2017 Grant and Scholarship Recipients:- At its annual Grants Banquet, the group, which also hosts the annual Golden Globe Awards, bestowed $2.8 million in charitable donations.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out $2.8 million in scholarships and grants to entertainment non-profits tonight at its annual Grants Banquet held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
Chelsea Handler hosted the event at which the organization of foreign journalists, which also presents the annual Golden Globe Awards, unveiled its charitable donations for the year. Promising to avoid politics for one night, she couldn’t resist one dig at the current president, saying, “Let’s celebrate the three things Donald Trump hates most — foreigners, the press and actually donating money to charity.”
HFPA president Meher Tatna welcomed guests and kicked off the proceedings by recounting how the HFPA gave $500,000 to the International Rescue Committee, which assists in humanitarian crises, in May at the Cannes Film Festival.
Leading off the list of celebrity presenters, Robert Pattinson, who’s starring in the upcoming Good Time, cited Meryl Streep’s speech at the last Golden Globe Awards in May, went on to say that “freedom of speech is under attack” around the world and then announced a special $200,000 donation to The Committee to Protect Journalists. And Dustin Hoffman, who’s appearing in the upcoming The Meyerowitz Stories, stepped forward to announce a $350,000 grant for The Film Foundation, which focuses on film restoration and preservation.
Other presenters included director Ava DuVernay; Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette of 13 Reasons Why; Armie Hammer; Matt Bomer; Elisabeth Moss; Chrissy Metz; Anthony Mackie; Aja Naomi King; Patrick Stewart; Stan Lee, accompanied by Chadwick Boseman, who’s starring in Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther; Kumail Nanjiani; Kathryn Hahn; Alison Brie; Bob Odenkirk; and Mark Hamill.
As part of the evening, Keala Settle, a Tony nominee for the 2013 Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody who has an upcoming role in The Greatest Showman, performed “Greatest Love of All.”
Over the past 25 years, the HFPA has committed nearly $30 million in grants, provided more than 1,500 scholarships and helped restore over 90 films. The mission of the HFPA’s Charitable Trust is to foster education, diversity and creative expression in art and film through a variety of programs and special grants.
