Overview
Škoda Auto also known as Škoda is an Automobile manufacturing unit. The Company originates in Czech Republic, The company is founded by Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement in 1895, as Laurin & Klement. The company was taken-over by Škoda Works in 1925. Volkswagen Group completly owned the company and made it its subsidiary in 2000 to make its entry level brand. Škoda brand cars surpasses the Volkswagen cars with price and features, while giving more space in its vehicles. The headquarters of the company is situated in Mlada Boleslav, Bohemia, Czech Republic. Winfried Vahland is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Christian Klingler is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The company produced 1.04 million units in 2014 and the annual rise in sales and production is by 12.7 percent. The other subsidiaries of the company are ŠKODA Auto Deutschland GmbH, Skoda Auto India Private Ltd., ŠKODA AUTO Slovensko s.r.o.. The company has Manufacturing facilities in Czech Republic, India, China, Russia and Slovakia and has Contract partners in Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
History
In 1859, Škoda Works plants was established for arm manufacturing. Škoda Auto is one of the five oldest companies in the history of car production. The other four are Tatra, Daimler, Opel and Peugeot.
It is which from the Škoda Auto originates, In the early 1980s the company started manufacturing bicycles. Škoda factories founded in 1869. In 1894, Vaclav Klement a 26 years old bookseller of Mlada Boleslav, Bohemia,couldn't found spare parts to repair his german made bicycle. He return the bicycle to the manufacturers Seidel and Naumann, with a attached letter written in Czech, to repair his bicycle. He received a reply letter written in german "If you would like an answer to your inquiry, you should try writing in a language we can understand".This reply prompt klement to start his own bicycle repair shop along with Vaclav Laurin. The pair acquired Werner "Motocyclette"in 1898, and after initial failure their first motorcycle launched in 1899.
Škoda
Laurin & Klementstarted producing trucks after World War I, in 1924 after facing critical problems the company searched for new partner. In 1925 Akciova společnost, dřive Škodovy zavody an arm manufacturer and one of the largest industrial enterprice in Europe bought Laurin & Klement. During the economic depression, Škoda started a new range of cars in 1930s. A newly designed chassis with backbone tube and all-around independent suspension was developed. It was first used in 1933 on Skoda 420 Standard. The newly designed chassis became the base for models Popular (845-1,089 cc), Rapid (1165–1766 cc), Favorit (1802–2091 cc) and Superb (2.5–4 l).
After World War II
In 1945, Mlada Boleslav factory reconstructed production of 1101 series started, Skodas first car after World War II. It was an upgraded version of Skoda Popular. In 1945, Skoda was seprated from parent company. Skoda still holds good reputation untill 1960s by producing models like Škoda 440 Spartak, 445 Octavia, Felicia and Škoda 1000 MB.
