The Ford Motor company or popularly known as Ford is an international automotive manufaturer of American origin. It is famous for building automobiles, luxury vehicles, commercial vehicles, automotive parts, It also used to built tractors. The company was founded by Henry Ford on 16 June, 1903. The headquarters of the company is located in Dearborn, Michigan, U.S., its headquarters is also known as Glass House. William C. Ford Jr. Is the Executive Chairman of the company, Mark Fields is the President & CEO. Other than manufacturing vehicles the company also provides services like Automotive Financing, vehicle Leasing and Vehicle Service. Company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the brand Ford, and luxury cars under brand Lincoln, which is a part of its division. It also owns Brazilian SUV makers, Troller and also FPV which is an Australian performance car manufacturers. Ford is also active worldwide sharing stakes of 2.1% in Mazda(Japan), 8% in Aston Martin(UK), 49% in Jiangling(China).
Ford's previously owned susidries in the UK, Jaguar and Land Rover, which were acquired in 1989 and 2000, were sold to Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford also owned Swedish automobile brand Volvo from 1999 to 2010. Ford discontinued the Mercury car brand in 2011, in which it sells the entry-level luxury cars in the United States, Canada, Mexico, nad Middle East. Ford is second largest car manufacturers in the U.S. after General Motors and is the fifth largest automobile maker in the world. Ford was ranked eight in the fortune 500 list in 2010. In 2008, Ford produced about 5.532 million automobiles in around 90 plants worldwide. Though the company went public in 1956, the Ford family having only 2% shares still holds the ownership on the company through special B Class shares, and has 40% voting rights.
History
The first company started by Henry Ford was Henry Ford Company, started on 3 November, 1901, which later changed into Cadillac Motor Company on 22 Auggust, 1902. In 1903, after $28,000 cash from twelve investors, in a converted factory, the Ford Motor Company was launched. In the initial years only few cars were developed in which two or three men groups assembled parts from supplier companies. After a decade the company became a leader in expansion and refinement of the assembly line concept.
In 1908, Model T was the first car in which Ford introduced the first cylinder with removable head. In 1927, Ford introduced the first car with safety glass in the windshield in the Model A. Ford also launched first V8 powered engine low price car in 1932. Ford provides Lifeguard safety package since 1956, which includes innovations such as standard deep-dish steering wheel, optional front, rear seatbelts for the first time in a car, and an optional padded dash. Ford introduced child-proof door locks in its cars in 1957, a mass-produced six-seater car with the first retractable hardtop. In 1965 Ford introduced the seat belt reminder light. The Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964.
