Asia Motors Industries Co., Ltd., majorly known as Asia Motors, was a car maker of South korea. The company was set-up in 1965 and disfunctioned in 1999. It was a subsidiary unit for Kia Motors.The headquarters of the company was in South Korea.
History
The Korean government in 1962, to keep up with its first ever five-year plan, used a measure of passing a law which exempt from taxes on imported parts to asssemble KD cars locally. As a results of this incentives, Asia Motor Industries was found. The company was involed in producing military vehicles initialy. The same year, the company entered in negotiation with the Fiat Group for assembling their cars and in 1969, they started assembling Fiat 124 models. The company then goes on to indulge into market of SUVs and heavy vehicles, which includes special military vehicles, lightweight cars, medium duty truck, civilian jeeps, vehicles components and buses and mini-buses. The Korean government in 1973, passed a plan to promote the production of low-cost cars for the export purpose, but Asia Motors cannot fulfill the plan's terms and the company was bought by Kia Motors in 1976. The Kia brand was bought by Hyundai and Asia Motors was discontinued in 1999. The Retona was then sold under the Kia brand.
