Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. is an Italian company known for the manufacturing of its luxury cars. The company was founded by Alexandre Darracq, Ugo Stella and Nicola Romeo on 24 June, 1910, in Milan by the name A.L.F.A.(Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). The company is owned by Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.. The headquarters of the company is in Turin, Italy. The invovement of the company in car racing has been since 1911. Italian state holding company Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale has the ownership power of the company between 1932 and 1986. The company in February 2007, became a part of the Fiat Group and the name is changed to Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A., it is a subsidiary of Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.. The company has produced 101,000 units in 2012. John Elkann is the President of the company, Harald Wester is the CEO and Reid A. Bigland is NAFTA region brand president and CEO.
History
French automobile company Alexandre Darracq, founded Societ Anonima Italiana Darracq(SAID) in 1906, which afterwards became Alfa Romeo. In 1909, SAID cars selling became low and Guiseppe Merosi was hired by the Italian partners of the firm to design new cars. A new company A.L.F.A. was formed on 24 June, 1910, with initial partnership with Darracq. The first independent car of the company was 1910 24 HP, which was designed by Merosi. Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, converted the factory to produce hardwares for Italian military. Alfa Romeo became the name of the company after the launch of Torpedo 20-30 HP, which was the first car with the company badge.
During the second world war, the Alfa factory was bombed and went in huge loss. The company stopped making luxury vehicles and started developing small, mass-produced vehicles in 1954 with cars like Giulietta series of berline (saloons/sedans), coupes and open two-seaters. All the three types have the Alfa Romeo overhead Twin Cam four-cylinder engine, which was initially has the capacity of 1300 cc. Thw capacity of the engine enlarged and produced till 1995.
Ater World War II
Alfa Romeo made their first car with front-wheel drive in 1952, named "Project 13-61". Like the front wheel drive cars, it also had the transverse-mounted, forward-motor layout. In the late 1950s, Alfa Romeo made another attempt on Project 13-61, with car named Tipo 103 and also reassembled the smaller version of its famous car Alfa Romeo Giulia.
In the 1960s, Alfa Romeo produced cars like GTA(Gran Turismo Allegerita), which was an aluminium-body version of coupe designed by Bertone and has powerful twin-plug engine. In 1970s Alfa Romeo made sports car such as Tipo 33, Tipo 33TT12 and Tipo 33SC12. In 1990s the models produced by the company are sporty and stylish along with economic benefits, such as GTA version of 147 hatchback, Brera designed by Giugiaro and 8C Competizione.
In 2007, Fiat Auto S.p.A. was distributed into four new alliances i.e. Fiat Automobiles S.p.A., Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A., Lancia Automobiles S.p.A. and Fiat Light Commercial Vehicles S.p.A.

Alfa romeo became famous for its small cars specially designed for carabinieri and italian Police, in the 1960s, for the models like Giulia Super and 2600 Sprint GT, which got the nickname Inseguimento(to chase)
